Halloween, that frightful time of year, is upon us once again. Not only is it the holiday where kids (and adults alike) get to dress up as their favorite ghosts, ghouls, goblins, fairies, heroes and more, but it happens to be my favorite holiday as well. Every year I get to watch my kids get all dressed up, excitement in their eyes, and go door to door collecting candy. Usually, I’m posted up on the porch handing out candy, but I do get to watch them in our neighborhood until they’re out of site.

My son is obsessed with video games. For the last two years, he’s dressed up as Mario for Halloween. No doubt, he makes a great Mario, but it would be nice to see him spread his wings a little and branch out to other characters, even if it’s just Luigi! This year though, he’s decided to go as Mickey Mouse, which is a pleasant surprise.

My daughters all try to go for something cute or current. Last year, Emma dressed up as Cleo DeNile from Monster High, Peyton went as a broken doll fairy type thing and Miley was the most adorable little Strawberry Shortcake! In years past, we’ve had other Monster High characters, Victorian queens and bat fairies. This year, Emma has decided to be a gypsy, Peyton wants to be Mrs. Scissorhands and Miley’s bring the Monster High theme back as Lagoona Blue.

Being that it’s mine and my wife’s favorite holiday as well, you know we have to get in on the action. Our local karaoke spot has a great Halloween party every year with karaoke and prizes for different categories of costumes. My wife, being the aspiring make up artist, hooked us up with some really cool zombie makeup last year. I went to the party as a zombie inmate and she was my zombie officer (pics below). We ended up winning the prize for scariest costume that night. It was a lot of fun. The next night, for trick or treating, I reprised the zombie role to hand out candy on our porch, while Trisha switched from zombie officer to sexy queen of hearts so as not to frighten away any small children in the neighborhood.

This year, with Trisha honing her makeup skills and watching all sorts of Halloween makeup tutorials on YouTube, she’s decided to take over the broken doll look for herself and I’ve found the coolest zipper face zombie design. It’ll literally look like I’m unzipping my face right off my skull. I can’t wait for Halloween! The makeup definitely take some time, though. Last year we spent all day getting ready for the Halloween party but I think this year, since we’re a little more used to the process, it won’t be such a grueling battle to get our makeup ready.

Whatever you decide to do for yourself or your kids this year, go hard or go home. Always make it a Halloween to remember.
