Community Collaboration With Magento Open Source

Magento 2.2 has arrived! The newest release fixes 428 bugs, with 17 percent of those being community contributions.

The full release notes can be found here.

The 17 percent represents 71 bug fixes that would’ve likely been overlooked if not for the efforts of the Magento community. This result was thanks in no small part to plenty of Contribution days and hackathons, improved GitHub management, and the tireless effort of the Community Engineering team.

At Meet Magento Sweden, I was fortunate enough to participate in the Contribution Day in Stockholm.

Meet Magento Sweden 2017 – Recap

June 6, 2017 0 Comments RSS Feed

After returning from the incredible Stockholm, it is time to recap this epic event.

Just before the main event, Magento organized a Contribution Day at Nordic Web Team offices. We spent the entire day coding with Magento core engineers trying to improve the Magento 2 platform, and our work led me to submit a pull request on GitHub to add a small feature to the CLI.

3 Takeaways from Magento Imagine

April 12, 2017 0 Comments RSS Feed

Magento ImagineAfter a long weekend of rest, it’s time to write a small recap of Magento Imagine 2017. Since I spent most of my time there at the Nexcess booth, my recap will focus on the tradeshow side of the event, rather than the conference.

The Marketplace was open 3 hours on Monday, 10 hours on Tuesday, and 5 hours on Wednesday, for a total of 18 hours.

The stats are awesome: 15 Nexcessers x ~9 hours each = 135 hours of amazing talks with lots of old and new friends.

As always, the organization by the Magento team was amazing. Every detail was considered, and for us expositors, there is no better place for a booth than the Wynn. This year was by far the most attended one I can remember, with over 3500 curious wanderers looking for even more ways to grow their business with Magento 2.

The State of PHP

June 22, 2016 0 Comments RSS Feed

Content MarketingWith PHP 5.5 end-of-life (EOL) just over the horizon, it’s worthwhile to catalog the versions still living in the eCommerce wilderness. Ben Marks started a poll recently and the results, to put it kindly, were discouraging.

Also, Composer creator Jordi Boggiano, ‏also known as @seldaek, released detailed stats that twisted the knife.

The chart below shows all PHP versions for all Composer users as of May 2016, when more than a third were still using PHP 5.5 or older. This confirms our experience as a web host, as we see plenty of sites running old versions of both PHP and Magento. These sites will be slow, and worse, they will stop receiving critical security updates. Refer to the PHP website for details on the shelf life of PHP 5.5 and other versions.

It’s Time to Move to Magento 2

January 21, 2016 3 Comments RSS Feed

After months of blood, sweat, and tears, Magento 2 is a reality. From a technical perspective, Magento 2 outperforms its older sibling, but what about from a business perspective?

New eCommerce platforms always provoke familiar questions. Will this be compatible with my workflow? Will it have the modules I use for payment and shipping? Will I understand the platform and its internals?

The short answer: yes. Magento 2 is ready for your live store, and you can both enjoy its new features and integrate it with the most common payment and shipping providers. Even better, the development team rebuilt the Magento 2 administrator panel to make life easier for merchants.

Install WordPress and PHP 7 on CentOS

July 21, 2015 0 Comments RSS Feed

With PHP 7 around the corner, we wanted to create a dev environment to test some apps and prepare for its arrival.

PHP 7 installation for CentOS is not difficult and can be found here. With the precompiled builds, we created a VM with the appropriate software to start testing WordPress: Apache2, MariaDB and PHP 7. For this VM, we used Vagrant and VirtualBox.

VM setup involves two files: Vagrantfile, with as a provisioner.
